2020 – 2021 Parent Letter
Mr. Oscar Navarrette – Wiggs MS
E-mail: [email protected]
Welcome parents and students! I am excited to start this new school year. This is my 19th year at Wiggs Middle School and I will be teaching three courses. Tech Apps for 6th grade, College and Career Readiness for 7th grade and Arts, Audio/Visual Technology and Communications for 8th grade.
Despite the challenges that we are all facing at this time, it continues to be my goal to spark interest in these areas and encourage all my students to take ownership of their education and of course, be successful.
As you know, we are starting the year with virtual learning and hopefully will transition to also incorporating the hybrid model. We will discuss assignments during virtual class and students will have the opportunity to ask questions, watch videos if necessary and work on their assignments. It is VERY IMPORTANT that students attend virtual class, so they understand the assignments. I will also be available after school (and evenings, when possible) through email if they need additional assistance.
I will be using the Schoology Learning Management System. Schoology will be used to view course content, lesson plans, assignments, worksheets, videos, due dates, and communicate information. Students will learn how to access Schoology within the first week and will be able to access 24 hours a day. Please have your child show you their Schoology account. In the teacher resource folder there is a link for parents to create their own account. Please remind your child to refer to Schoology on daily basis.
EXPECTATIONS
Personal Responsibility
ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to attend class every day
Students are expected to login to their Schoology account on a daily basis
Student will be marked absent if they do not attend the online class

ASSIGNMENTS/HOMEWORK/GRADING:
Assignments will be assigned during class and should be completed within the teacher’s expectations. Some assignments will take one day, while other may take weeks. Students should be working on an assignment at all times unless it has been completed. If an assignment is completed early, students are allowed to access only approved websites and/or complete any past due assignments. Students will have homework only if they cannot complete the assignments during class time or if they absent. If a student has a question, I will be available by email. Assignments and due dates are located in Schoology. Please review your child's grades on a weekly basis.
Late Work Policy
Assignments may be turned in late, however, student will have only 5 school days from the due date to turn in the assignment. Assignments later than one week will be considered a failed grade and with follow redoing of failed assignments policy. Student absences will be taken into consideration.
Redoing of Failed Assignments Policy (District Policy)
A student shall be allowed to redo assignments/test where a grade of a 70% was not earned. A student shall have 5 school days from the day of the assignment is posted to redo or retake a test. It is encouraged that the student discusses the assignment with the teacher prior to redoing the failing grade. This will ensure that the student understands the correct requirements and expectations of the assignment. Students have up to two additional attempts to achieve a passing score. The average of the scores shall be recorded in the grade book as their final grade for the redo assignment. Students must come after school to retake test/quizzes. Student absences will be taken into consideration.
